Year 2 (The Starfish)

Fortnight beginning 6th June 2019

Fortnight beginning 6th May 2019

In Year 2, we have been writing a diary entry from a gladiator and in the next two weeks, we are planning a story about a gladiator based on the film ‘Gladiators of Rome’. We have so far made a story plan and used drama to act it out. The film looks so good that we are excited to watch it at the end of term as our reward for our hard work.

In Maths, we have been focusing our learning on place value and measure (2D/3D shape, length, mass and capacity). We have changed our daily maths sessions so that we do not just practise the skills, we apply them through problem solving on a daily basis and it is starting to pay off.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have had our weekly PE session with Mrs Kilner focusing on the game of Rounders but making it more Year 2 friendly. We have planned a design for a gladiator shield (Art) using the cereal boxes we brought in. We have compared Skegness to another place in Brazil and looked at the similarities and differences between the two places (Geography) and we have continued to improve our speed when answering arithmetic calculations.

Just in case you were not aware, we have also took part in some Year 2 challenges this month and we have all tried our best. We love a good challenge!

Fortnight beginning 23rd April 2019

In Year 2, we have been aiming to be published authors on Pobble. We have written a narrative based on a life through a window and we have written a letter to a gladiator in Rome. Some of us were published on Pobble over the past 2 weeks and we are so proud of our achievements.

In Maths, we have been refreshing our knowledge over the five calculation strategies – addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions all linking to problem solving. It has been fun actually realising that we have remembered quite a lot.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have had our weekly PE session with Mrs Kilner focusing on the game of Rounders, we have planned a design for a gladiator shield (Art), we had a look at photos of Skegness from the past even before the Railway station was built (History) and we have started our daily Maths Blast sessions where we have 10 minutes to answer 10 questions. This has been fun and we look forward to it every day. What a start to Term 4 in Y2.

Here is a couple of our published pieces of work on Pobble.

Fortnight beginning 25th March 2019

In Year 2, we have been looking at the story of ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and we have used drama to help us retell the story to develop our vocabulary. We then used this experience to help write the story in our own words.

In Maths, we have used the expanded column to solve our calculation problems, but with the operation of subtraction. This has proved tricky especially when the subtracting crosses a ten.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have had our weekly JB Sport Coaching session practising our hockey skills, with even the adults getting a little competitive. We have completed a collage in Art, travelled to Australia and Asia in Geography and continued to impress JB Sport Coaching during our swimming sessions at Southview Leisure Centre.

Fortnight beginning 11th March 2019

In Year 2, we have been focusing on the skills of using alliteration and similes in our writing and then we looked at writing an acrostic poem where we could apply our new techniques.

In Maths, we have been looking at a new strategy to help us solve addition problems. We have looked at the expanded column method and we were very impressed at how quick it is. We are looking forward to using this strategy when we take away.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have had our weekly JB Sport Coaching session looking at hockey (PE), we have used charcoal to create an elephant picture from Africa (Art), we are travelling the world looking at all the different continents (Geography) and we have enjoyed our first couple of swimming sessions at Southview. What a start to term 4!

Fortnight beginning 4th February 2019

In Year 2, we have been writing a fact sheet about Neil Armstrong trying to include everything that we have found out over the past 6 weeks.

In Maths, we have been focusing our learning on problem solving and trying to apply our calculation skills in different ways. This was really tricky and we will continue to look at this throughout the next term. We will master our problem solving abilities with practise.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have had our ‘Healthy Lifestyles’ session with JB Sport Coaching where we have applied all of our skills from the past 5 weeks. In Science, we have been looking at food chains and the components of a food chain. We have painted a map of Australia in the style of aboriginal art (Art). We have also had Music with Mrs Taylor and PE with Mr Parker.

In the last week of term we had our parent drop in, where we worked with our parents to complete a quiz. We showed just how hard we have been working and we think they were impressed.

Fortnight beginning 21st January 2019

In Year 2, we have been looking at the Ganesh story in English and retelling it in our own words. We have really focused on our punctuation and reading it back to make sure it makes sense. We think we have done really well.

In Maths, we have been focusing on fractions and division. We are trying hard to remember what each number means in a fraction, but this is proving to be a bit tricky. We will not give up though.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have had our ‘Healthy Lifestyles’ session with JB Coaching where we have been focusing on speed and stamina. In Science, we have looked at the main habitats in our world and we have researched what animals live in them and why the areas are suitable. In History, we have continued to research Neil Armstrong (our famous astronaut). We have also had Music with Mrs Taylor and PE with Mr Parker.

Fortnight beginning 7th January 2019

In Year 2, we have had an intense start back. It’s calculation all the way for us in Maths. We have looked at addition and subtraction and we have moved our learning onto solving missing number problems and using the inverse to help us do this.

We have gone right back to basics in English focusing more on the skills. This week we have reminded ourselves about capital letters and full stops and where exactly we need to include them. For some of us this is still proving tricky!

In other areas of the curriculum, we have had our first ‘Healthy Lifestyles’ session with JB Coaching. This week we were focusing on our skeleton and our main muscles in our body, in particular ‘The Heart’. In Science, we have moved onto our topic ‘Living things and their habitats’. We were looking at the vocabulary ‘living, dead and never alive’ and we have been on a habitat hunt in our outside learning area. In History, we have looked at a very famous astronaut and we have written questions that we want to find out about him. We have also taken part in Music with Mrs Taylor and PE with Mr Parker.

We think this is going to be a very exciting term with our topic ‘One Giant Leap’. I wonder where our leap will take us.

Fortnight beginning 3rd December 2018

In Year 2, for the past two weeks, we have been on an exciting trip to Neverland and we have written a postcard back to our family at home. We earned a lot of money from Miss Struggles and Mrs Kilner so we must have put a lot of effort into them and included our ‘desirables’.

In Maths, we have been problem solving and reading questions where we have had to look for the important words to solve whether it is an addition, subtraction, multiplication or division calculation. This was really tricky so we are going to leave it for a bit and revisit it again.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have taken part in an exhausting Boxercise session as well as jumping off the apparatus during Gymnastics (PE) and we finished our PowerPoint presentations on Florence Nightingale (Computing). We are really proud of them.

As a class, we have joined up with Year 3 to practise our ‘Alternative Christmas Show’ and we hope you enjoy it next week.

Fortnight beginning 19th November 2018

In Year 2, for the past two weeks, we have been on an exciting trip to Neverland and we have written a postcard back to our family at home. We earned a lot of money from Miss Struggles and Mrs Kilner so we must have put a lot of effort into them and included our ‘desirables’.

As a class, we have joined up with Year 3 to practise our ‘Alternative Christmas Show’ and we hope you enjoy it next week.

Fortnight beginning 5th November 2018

In Year 2, for the past two weeks, we have been looking at writing character descriptions for the characters in Peter Pan. Our focus was the main character but then at some point, Miss Struggles is going to surprise us with a character description of Captain Hook. We will have to impress her with our writing so we can earn some more money to spend in our class shop – Toys 4 Us.

In Maths, we have been consolidating multiplication and division. We are still finding this tricky because we are using the number line now, but we are not giving up as we can earn 3p for being resilient!

In other areas of the curriculum, we have taken part in a very active Boxercise session as well as balancing on apparatus in Gymnastics (PE), played the game ‘Taboo’ to learn our vocabulary (Science), started to create 3d models of Neverland (Art) and used PowerPoint to begin to make a presentation about Florence Nightingale (Computing).

As a class, we have also been completing challenges with Mrs Kilner and Miss Struggles, and we must have impressed them because everyone earned more money each day.

Fortnight beginning 15th October 2018

In Year Two, for the past two weeks, we have been writing rainbow sentences to try and help us remember our full stops. Miss Struggles and Mrs Kilner were very impressed with the improvements that some of the children made. Following the Half Term holidays, we will now be looking at Peter Pan as part of our ‘This is Me’ topic.

In Maths, we have been looking at fractions of shape and of quantity. This has been quite tricky as we are finding it difficult to remember which number tells us how many parts it needs to be split into.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have taken part in a very active team games session and will now start to learn new gymnastics skills as well as have some Boxercise lessons (PE). In Science we produced an investigation/competition for our parents and carers (Science) to see whether children or adults are better at physical activity. In Computing we continued to look at being safe whilst online. We will be having our Eco sessions on a Friday where we will be working a lot outside. Please remember to bring in your wellies.

It has been a good end to the half term and also a great start to this term.

What’s even more amazing is that we are now going to be paid for all our hard work and one winner from each group each week will be able to visit our class shop and buy something with their wages. How fantastic! We do, however, have to be careful we don’t incur any fines though!

Fortnight beginning 1st October 2018

In Year 2, we have been writing a newspaper article about the hospitals in the Crimean War. We initially had to research this and look at the features of a newspaper, but then we put all of that teaching and learning together to write our own editorial.

In Maths, we have been focusing our learning on multiplication and division and looking again at problem solving linked to the two areas. We do find this tricky but we are persevering and becoming more independent. We need to just make sure we read the question first and then have a go!

In other areas of the curriculum, we have taken part in a very active game of Tag Rugby (PE), looked at what is meant by the word ‘hygiene’ and created a poster linked with this (Science), looked at being safe whilst online (Computing) and found out about the Hindu God Ganesh (RE).

It’s been a fun couple of weeks and we can’t believe how quick this term has gone.

Week beginning 24th September 2018

This week, we have been thinking about Florence Nightingale and we have written a diary entry from either her or one of the injured soldiers. It was fun taking on the role of these characters and we even had a go at hot seating to try and jazz things up a bit to influence our writing.

In Maths, we have been looking at subtraction and moving our learning away from the number line to applying what we know and solving problems. This has continued to prove tricky but we need to make sure that we read each question first.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have taken part in a very active game of Tag Rugby (PE), looked at what makes a healthy plate (Science), completing algorithms (Computing) and found out about the job roles of Hindu Gods (RE).

Week beginning 17th September 2018

This week, have been thinking about Florence Nightingale and creating a new medicine for a cold. From this we have listed our ingredients and we have written instructions to show other people how to make it. Some of our medicines may not be nice though, judging by the ingredients included!

In Maths, we have been looking at our addition and moving our learning away from the number line by applying what we know when solving problems. This has proved tricky but we persevered.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have used one of the artists from the previous week and created a piece in their style (Art), planned an investigation (Science), completing algorithms (Computing) and found out a little bit more about some of the Hindu gods (RE).

Week beginning 10th September 2018

In Year 2 this week, we have been looking at writing a character description for George from the Roald Dahl classic ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. We have been trying to include our expanded noun phrases and making sure we put them in front of the noun.

In Maths, we have been looking at our addition and subtraction facts to 10 and 20.  We have really impressed our adults.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have been comparing artists (Art), practising our ball skills and creating a cats dance (PE), looking at how humans change over time (Science) and describing the Hindu God Brahma (RE). What another busy week!

Week beginning 4th September 2018

What a start to the year we have had in the Starfish class! We thought Miss Struggles would ease us in gently but we have hit the floor running.

We have been writing about ourselves in English, looking at place value in Maths, creating our own family tree in Science, discussing the god Brahma in RE, finding out about Florence Nightingale in History and comparing different styles of art in Art. We also had lots of fun with Mr Parker in PE, trying to build a tall tower using only our shoes and some cones. No wonder we are all tired.
