Year 3 (The Pandas)
Fortnight beginning 15th October 2018
In Year Three, we have had a great first week back, learning about Guy Fawkes as part of our ‘This is Me’ topic. We looked at the story from Guy Fawkes’ perspective and used our imaginations to travel down under the Houses of Parliament. We thought of questions that we would like to ask, and hot-seated some children to answer them as Guy Fawkes would have. In Maths, we have had a big focus on multiplication, learning ways to multiply with large numbers. As part of PSHE, we have been looking closely at what makes us unique. The children loved playing a game of guess who to demonstrate our differences.
Fortnight beginning 1st October 2018
As part of our topic for the past two weeks, we have been learning about Steve Irwin and comparing Australia to England. We watched some exciting clips of him catching snakes and crocodiles. We used these for adventure story writing in English and as a stimulus for our guided reading. Last week, we started looking at the history of Butlins. We had visitors in from Butlins to tell us all about how it is now and some interesting facts about how Butlins has changed over the years. We have also had an exciting science afternoon, where we made boats out of different materials to see which would be the best. Ask your child to see if they can remember the results.
Week beginning 24th September 2018
We have had an exciting week looking at Zayn Malik as part of our ‘This is Me’ topic work this week. We have been looking closely at Islam and how Muslims worship. We have also sung One Direction songs as part of our guided reading work, practising our speed reading and fluency. In Maths, we have been looking at different ways that we can subtract and have been challenging ourselves using new methods and larger numbers. We have made a class poem about our Pandas, Peggy and Pete, during English this week and have been discussing what makes a great poem.
Week beginning 17th September 2018
This week, we have continued looking in detail at Matilda. In English, we had a debate about whether or not the Chokey should be allowed in school. We then looked at persuasive letters and wrote our own to Miss Trunchbull. In Maths, we have moved on to subtraction and have been applying these skills whilst problem solving. During our afternoons, we have enjoyed finding out more information about Quentin Blake, learning a song from The Lion King with Mrs Taylor and learning some new exercises with Mr Parker. What a busy week we have had!
Week beginning 10th September 2018
We have had a great week of learning in Year 3. In English, we have been reading Matilda and have based our writing for the week on the first two chapters of the book. We have looked closely at what makes a good character and setting description, and then we have written our own Matilda adventures. In Maths, we have been using our partitioning skills to add two and three digit numbers. In Topic, we have been researching Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake. We took part in a live Roald Dahl workshop online to celebrate his birthday.
Week beginning 4th September 2018
What a fantastic first week we have had in Year 3! In English, we have looked at instructions, having to write our own instructions on how to put your school uniform on. The adults were also really impressed with the children’s descriptive writing about their favourite places. In Maths, we have focused on place value and how to partition numbers. The children worked in groups with lots of resources to show their number in as many different ways as they could. We have also had lots of fun in the afternoons, with our first PE and Music sessions.
