Cookery Club

Wednesdays 3.15pm – 4.15pm with Miss Struggles

At Cookery Club the children are encouraged to discover and try new foods, learn about healthy and nutritious eating and develop life skills and confidence. Most importantly, food is made fun!

ATTENTION

COOKERY CLUB WILL NOT BE TAKING PLACE IN TERM 5 AND TERM 6.

WB 27.3.17

This week in Cookery Club we have been making homemade burgers.

No, we didn’t get them from Iceland we made them from scratch and if we’re completely honest, it was much better and healthier.

Some of the ingredients we had to put in surprised us e.g. cream crackers, but we just went with it and they looked and tasted amazing, although a little hot as we were a little too generous with the chilli paste.

WB 13.3.17

This week in Cookery Club we have been making chocolate fairy cakes.  We again had to do everything this week from weighing out the ingredients, to mixing it and then washing up. As a treat Miss Struggles let us lick the bowl. How tasty!

WB 27.2.17

This week in Cookery Club we have been making chocolate chip cookies, both milk and white.  They smelt delicious when they were cooking in the oven. Yum! Yum!

Miss Struggles didn’t weigh any of our ingredients this time so we had to do it ourselves.  Busy bakers indeed today.

WB 20.2.17

Year 3 have started this term in Cookery Club and what a delight that is. We have been making our own cheesecakes.  We had to get the hand mixer out this week to mix everything together and we even had our own little tray.  We put some other goodies into our cheesecake just to make it even more tempting.

We cannot wait to get our taste buds into this, although it needs to be chilled in the fridge for an hour first!

WB 6.2.17

This week we have been making chocolate brownies. All we needed was to add an egg, oil and some water to our mixture as brownies take a while to bake in the oven. Our hand slipped when adding some of the oil so our mixture got a little more than it needed. Ooops!  What amazing bakers we are!

WB 30.1.17

This week we have been making scones and added in an unusual ingredient, chocolate chips.  Our ingredients were already measured because our focus was rolling out our mixture.  Whilst our scones were baking nicely in the oven, we had the pleasure of tasting scones (with a little bit of butter and jam) to see what we were making. How fantastic!

WB 23.1.17

This week we have been making flapjacks.  We had to first measure our ingredients before we mixed it together. It was fun melting the butter and syrup, but it took ages to cook in the oven.  It was ok though because we had plenty of washing up to do to pass the time.

WB 16.1.17

This week we have been making M&M cookies.  We had to first measure our ingredients before we mixed it together. Miss Struggles wanted to make sure we could read the measuring scales.  We then got sticky hands because we had to make small balls with the mixture.  We really wanted to lick our fingers but we restrained ourselves until the end! I mean we had to think about germs!

WB 9.1.17

This week we have been making our own cheesecakes.  We had to get the hand mixer out this week to mix everything together and we even had our own little tray.  We put some other goodies into our cheesecake just to make it even more tempting.

We cannot wait to get our taste buds into this although it needs to be chilled in the fridge for an hour first!

WB 12.12.16

This week we have been making mince pies in preparation for Santa to come because we all know he likes a good mince pie!

We practised our cutting skills to make the base and tops to the mince pies and then we put the filling in before we sealed them up ready to put in the oven.

WB 5.12.16

This week we have been making cookies and we have put some mini smarties in them to add extra flavour.  We had to weigh our ingredients and then mix it all up before we got our hands all gooey by making the mixture into small balls.

This was the best bit but it was hard not to lick our fingers!

WB 28.11.16

This week we have been making biscuits. Miss Struggles was back this week. We had lots of fun rolling out our dough and then cutting them into the shapes ready to put in the oven.   We then sprinkled each biscuits with a bit of sugar to make them extra tasty.

WB 21.11.16

This week we have been making fairy cakes. We were lucky to have the help from Miss Short, Mrs Warren and Mrs Crow this week.  We had fun putting the mixture into the bun cases and some even managed to get into our mouths. We had a lot of fun and we look forward to seeing what delicious treats we are making next week.

WB 14.11.16

This week in cookery club we made jam and lemon curd tarts.  We needed to cut out the pastry to fit into the moulds and then cook them a little before putting the jam or lemon curd in it.  They were still nice and warm when we took them home. How delicious!

WB 31.10.16

Cookery club is here and Reception has joined us this term!

This week we have been making pizzas. Our focus was chopping. We used pitta breads to make our pizza bases and chopped up our ham and pineapple for our topping.  We obviously then used cheese to cover it.

WB 10.10.16

This week we have been making jam and lemon tarts with Mrs Crow.  We had to shape the pastry and put it into the tin and then cook it a little before we could add the jam/lemon.  We then had to put them in the oven again to cook a little more. This was fun but some of the jam leaked!

WB 3.10.16

This week we have been making fairy cakes with Mrs Crow.  We have made some and we even had time to decorate some that Miss Struggles had bought us whilst ours were cooking.  Cookery club can be very messy and this week we even got to listen to some music when baking.  We love Cookery Club!

WB 26.9.16

This week we have been making rice krispie cakes with Mrs Crow ready for our MacMillan event this Friday. We have used sweets, marshmallows and sprinkles to decorate them and they look fabulous so we hope you can come along to buy them and support a good cause.

WB 19.9.16

Cookery club is back!

This week we have been making pizzas. Our focus was chopping. We used pitta breads to make our pizza bases and chopped up our chicken or ham along with onions for our topping.  We obviously then used cheese to cover it.

We could not wait for the pizzas to cook, so we ate the left over toppings whilst we were waiting.

WB 4.7.16

This week in Cookery Club we have made banana ice cream milkshake and chocolate chip cookies to dip in.

Our focus this week was to use all the skills we have acquired over our time in Cookery Club e.g. measuring, rolling and chopping.

Both items tasted amazing especially when we dipped our cookies into our milkshake.  Delicious!

WB 27.6.16

This week in Cookery Club we have made tangy lemon tarts.

Our focus this week was to try and complete all the stages, in the time we have for our club.  This was tricky, but with a lot of running around we were successful.

Thank goodness as they were amazing!

IMG_8936 IMG_8938

WB 20.6.16

This week in Cookery Club we have made gooey chocolate brownies.

Our focus this week was not eating the mixture before it was cooked as it smelt delicious.  This was tricky and also so was trying to get it out of the baking tray.

Thank goodness greaseproof paper was used to help, otherwise we would have been eating it out of the tray!

WB 13.6.16

This week in Cookery Club we have made delicious fairy cakes.

Our focus this week was spooning the mixture into the cases so we needed a steady hand to ensure the mixture actually went into the cases and not all over the table!

IMG_8418

WB 6.6.16

This week in Cookery Club Year 2 children have returned for the last sessions for Cookery club 2016 (this year is going too quickly) and to test their baking skills we have made shortbread biscuits.  Yummy!

Our skill focus this week was rolling and trying not to get flour all over us!  The latter was the hardest part and some of us were not successful.

We sprinkled a little bit of sugar on the top of each to make sure they tasted sweet.

IMG_8163 IMG_8165

WB 23.5.16

This week in Cookery Club we have been making flapjacks.  We decided to put chocolate chips and raisins in them for a little bit of variety.  Our focus this week was measuring so we had a go at weighing the porridge oats.  A lot went on the table and floor, but we just had enough!

IMG_7458 IMG_7459 IMG_7460 IMG_7461

WB 25.4.16

This week in Cookery Club Reception children have made shortbread biscuits.  Yummy!

Our skill focus this week has been to use a rolling pin and trust us when we say, things got a little sticky!

We made sure that we sprinkled a little bit of sugar on the top of each biscuit so that they were nice and sweet and ready to eat.

WB 18.4.16

Reception children are back!

This week we have been making pizzas. Our focus was chopping. We used pitta breads to make our pizzas with and chopped up our pepperoni or ham along with mushrooms and onions.  We obviously then used cheese to cover it.

We could not wait for the pizzas to cook, so we ate the left over toppings!

WB 21.3.16

This week in Cookery Club we have been making pizzas. Our focus was chopping. We used pitta breads to make our pizzas with and chopped up our pepperoni that we wanted as our topping, along with cheese.

We were even allowed to make 2 each so we had one for someone else at home, unless we liked them so much that we eat them both!

IMG_7108 IMG_7109 IMG_7110

WB 14.3.16

This week in Cookery Club we have been making fairy cakes. Our focus was weighing. Miss Struggles even let us have a spoon each to try some of our tasty mixture.  That was fabulous.

WB 7.3.16

This week in Cookery Club Year 1 children wanted to make chocolate flapjacks.  Miss Struggles melted the ingredients over the hob and we measured everything and mixed it altogether.

We thought they were already cooked but Miss Struggles told us they had to go in the oven for 40 minutes before they were cooked!  It was the longest 40 minutes of our lives!

When they finally came out of the oven they looked delicious, but because they were so hot when they were being cut up some were breaking.  They still tasted good though.

WB 29.2.16

This week in Cookery Club Year 1 children wanted to make smoothies so we decided on strawberry and banana. Unfortunately, Miss Struggles couldn’t get any strawberries so we had raspberries and bananas instead.

Some of us liked it but others didn’t like the bits in the smoothie because of the raspberries.

Our skill focus this week was chopping all of the fruit into pieces to put into the mixer.

Miss Struggles also made some cakes for us to have with our smoothie. They were delicious!

WB 22.2.16

This week in Cookery Club Year 1 children have started again (this year is going too quickly) and to ease the new group in we have made shortbread biscuits.  Yummy!

Our skill focus this week was measuring and trying not to get flour all over us!  The latter was the hardest part.

We made sure that we sprinkled a little bit of sugar on the top of each biscuit and also that we made enough for the teachers.

WB 8.2.16

This week in Cookery Club we have been making cookies with chocolate chips.  Our hands were rather sticky, but it was fun.  They were so gooey and delicious. Yum! Yum!

WB 25.1.16

This week in Cookery Club we have been making fairy cakes. Our focus was weighing. We decided that we wanted to be a bit more adventurous so we have coloured our cakes this week red and blue and mixed the mixtures together.  This was a lot of fun and they didn’t turn out too bad.  The main thing was they tasted yummy! Miss Struggles even let us have a spoon each to try some of our tasty mixture.  That was fabulous.

WB 18.1.16

This week in Cookery Club we have made shortbread biscuits after a long discussion last week trying to agree what we would like to make.

Our skill focus this week was to use the rolling pin.  This was fun and occasionally was a little bit sticky! Note to self, must remember flour to stop it from sticking to the table or rolling pin!

We made sure that we sprinkled a little bit of sugar on the top of each biscuit and also that we made enough for the teachers.

This recipe is a closely guarded family recipe of Miss Struggles but if you would like to try and make something similar at home click here to get the recipe.

WB 11.1.16

This week in Cookery Club the Year 2 children have come to visit and we have made our very own pizzas.  Our skill focus this week is chopping.  We had the following toppings for our pizzas.  They were tomato, cheese, ham, pineapple, peppers and onion. Our task set by Miss Struggles was to make our pizza colourful so we couldn’t just have cheese on the top.

I would just like to say thank you to the Reception children in my Cookery Club.  They were fantastic and were a pleasure to have.  I look forward to welcoming back the Year 2 Cookery children next term.

WB 30.11.15

WB 19.10.15

This week in Cookery Club we have been making scones.  We have made plain scones and scones with currents in.  It was fun getting our hands all sticky and then rolling it out ready to cut.  The rolling pin was quite tricky to master, but with more practise we could be on ‘The Great British Bake Off’ next year!

WB 12.10.15

This week in Cookery Club we have been making sandwiches.  We have been practising our spreading skills using our knife.  This was very tricky as some of us were pressing so hard that we attached to the bread to the butter on the knife!

It was fun adding in all of our fillings.  We had the choice of ham, cheese, tomatoes, cucumber and sauces.  Some children were putting tomato sauce on their sandwich but each to their own!

WB 28.9.15

This week in Cookery Club we have been making fairy cakes.  Some we flavoured with vanilla and some with cocoa powder to make them chocolatey.  The chocolate ones smelled really yummy and Miss Struggles even let us have a spoon each to try some of our mixtures.  That was fabulous.

This week in Cookery Club we have been making flapjacks with chocolate chips and raisins.  It smelled lovely even before we put it in the oven.

Every week we also make some for the teachers and as the children said “We need to put raisins in the teacher’s flapjacks because they have to be healthy too!”
