Year 2 (The Starfish)
Week beginning 3.5.21 - 10.5.21
In English this week, we had the opportunity to showcase our independent writing skills. We created a class story map, which we then used to demonstrate to Miss Struggles just how much we have learnt so far in Year 2. Our sentence stacking board came in very handy to help remind us what we needed to include in our work.
In Maths, we looked at shape, both 2D and 3D. It was tricky to remember some of the shapes that we had learnt in Year 1 but we tried our best to impress Mrs Kilner and Miss Norris with how much we knew already. If anyone is unsure of any 3D shapes, ask Bobby…he is a whizz!
In other areas of the curriculum, we had another great music session with Mrs Taylor from the Piano Academy. Mrs Wright popped her head into the classroom and was very impressed with our efforts when we used the claves to play along to the music. Mrs Kilner wore us out playing dodge ball in PE and we have now started to look at the life of Neil Armstrong in History, as well as researching and drawing a template for our Tree of Trust in Art, which we will now use to sculpt a 3D model.
Well done to our Stars of the Week: Kiefer, Leah-Rose and Maisie for their super hard work in all tasks throughout the week.
Week Beginning 19.4.21 - 26.4.21
We have had a great first week back from the holidays. To kick off our new topic based on Trust, we took part in a salt or sugar challenge. We had to show our trust in either Miss Struggles or Mrs Kilner and then this determined whether we dipped our sweet into the sugar or the salt. We really enjoyed the task although, because the adults were very convincing, some of us did choose the salt!
As part of our Write Stuff English lessons, we participated in an experience day where we were tasked with creating a group poem. Titled Stars, it highlighted the great qualities of everyone in the class and bought a smile to all our faces.
During our Maths lessons, we revisited Money and the value of coins. Some of us found this a little bit tricky but we are now much more confident than before. Ask us to help you pay for the shopping when we go for our groceries.
In other areas of the curriculum, we had a great run around the field in PE when we played football rounders, we watched a video about the story of Adam and Eve in RE and in History, we have started to learn about Neil Armstrong, the astronaut who went to the moon. We also welcomed back Mrs Taylor from the Piano Academy who taught us about the rhythm and beat of the music.
Well done to our Star of the Week Harvey for his positive attitude to his learning and putting 100% into each task.
Week Beginning 22.3.21 - 29.3.21
We are continuing to use our Fantastics to help us create our own Stardust story. Our drama sessions have helped us develop our writing by having a better understanding of how the characters may be feeling. We have had so many great ideas that the adults in class are struggling to choose just one example to go up on our sentence stacking board.
Miss Struggles has introduced us to a new strategy for working out calculations in our Maths lessons. Most of us have found the expanded column method enabled us to be more successful in our learning and much more confident when completing our Maths Blast challenges.
In other areas of the curriculum, we have honed our bat and ball skills in PE, attempted to sew our super hero puppets in DT and, during History, we discussed what changes could be made to Skegness to attract more visitors: Disney Land, better shops, an airport and no more COVID were some of the suggestions.
All of the children are working so hard at the moment but those who have shone for our Stars of the Week are Verity, Erica, Keeva , Freya and Jack G.
Week Beginning 22.2.21 - 1.3.21
We have had a lot of fun in our English this week, focusing our writing on the Fantastics to help us create our own superhero poems. We initially found it a bit tricky to understand the correct format of poetry but by the end of the week, we had figured it out and came up with some really good ideas. We loved the CHOT sessions. If you’re not sure what this means, why not ask us?
During Maths, we concentrated our efforts on Measure, looking at centimetres and metres, capacity and temperature. We are also continuing to practise our calculations in our daily Maths Blast challenges. We are getting pretty good at these now.
PE is always fun and, this term, we are learning all about bat and balls skills relating to tennis. We didn’t realise how difficult it was to balance the ball on a racket so quite a few of us ended up doing lots of star jumps and burpees for dropping the ball. We did, however, manage to get the hang of it by the end of our first lesson.
Week Beginning 18.1.21 - 25.1 21
Year 2 have certainly hit the ground running after the holidays! Our theme for English this term is Superheroes and last week we looked at different career paths that we may choose. Our adults at home must have been very pleased that Monday’s tasks involved cleaning, where we had to complete chores around the house. The children in the hub were very good at cleaning their workstations. We also created some fantastic acrostic poems alongside our gardening task and learnt about the roles of Plumbers and Electricians. With the help of the flipgrid videos from Miss Struggles, we have been continuing to learn how to solve missing box calculations in our Maths sessions, this time focusing on multiplication. We are getting so much better at these now. In other areas of our work, we looked at some historical photos of Skegness in History, food chains in Science, and produced some junk models of Superhero vehicles during Art.
Well done to our learning ‘Stars of the Week’ Dolcie, Maya, Verity and Leighton.
ATTENTION PARENTS - WHOLE CLASS TEAM CALL 10.2.21
If you missed our Teams call today, I set the children a challenge for our call next week. Their mission is to find a joke that they want to share with their friends during the call, that will make the Year Two adults cry with laughter.
I have talked through with the children the new learning channel on our Year 2 team. If you would like to find out more about this and be part of it, please join our Teams call on Wednesday 10th February at 2pm where I will go through it again with you.
How to use Flipgrid
Please follow these instructions to help you access Flipgrid and record your reading videos.
Attention Starfish Class
We know that with lockdown not all children are able to access PE in Schools or interact with the Lincoln City Foundation coaches as much as they usually would, we don’t want them missing out so we have been delivering LIVE PE every Friday at 2.30pm on our YouTube channel. These videos are targeted to EYFS and KS1 as it is vital they develop their ABC’s for sport skills (agility, balance and coordination), each week has its own theme and the videos are around 15 minutes long. These can be used as a PE starter, breaktime activity or to get them up and going first thing when they get to school to be more productive and awake! They can also be sent out to everyone who is learning from home to ensure they are still keeping active as the videos are a quarter of the time a child should be active a day (1 hour). Don’t worry if you have missed the first 2 weeks as the links are bellow!

Week Beginning 23.11.20 - 30.11.20
We have had another fun packed week in Year 2. We have learnt all about what the Victorians used to eat and then made our very own sugar mice. We had to leave them to dry for a couple of days, but they were very yummy. We have also created our own recipe instructions for our own Wonka Bars. Why don’t you ask us how to make them? In Maths, we have been continuing to solve money problems. Adding a ‘p’ in our number sentence has confused us a little bit but we have been determined to complete the challenges. In our other learning, we used our RE knowledge to produce some colourful stain-glass style pictures of Ganesh, the god of wisdom and strength, we created a healthy food plate in Science and had a great session using the toboggans in PE.
Our Year 2 stars earnt their award this week by impressing the adults in class with their determination, hard work and resilience. Well done Freya and Jack.
Week Beginning 9.11.20 - 16.11.20
The one and only Mr Willy Wonka has written to ask Y2 to guard a secret recipe. To persuade us to help, he also sent along a sweet shop. We have worked super hard to earn golden tickets which allow us to buy the sweets at the end of each day. They are rather yummy. Miss Struggles and the other adults in class were really impressed with our replies. During our Maths sessions, we have been looking at fractions and how to divide both numbers and shapes equally. We were quite impressive!
In other areas of our learning, we used oil pastels to produce South American inspired artwork of some Amazon Rainforest animals and we had a fun IT lesson using the Lego WeDo to program our devices. We can’t wait to use that again. All in all, we have had a fabulous couple of weeks in Year 2!
Huge congratulations to Harvey, Jude and Verity for being our ‘Stars of the Week’ so far this term. They have all been very impressive!
Week Beginning 12.10.20 - 19.10.20
What a fabulous couple of weeks we have had in Year 2. It has been filled with more calculations but those have been focused on subtraction and multiplication. We have come to realise that the number line is rather tricky but the more we practise, the better we are getting. As a class, we have thoroughly enjoyed looking at the story ‘A Tale of Two Feathers’ where we looked at the four different sentence types and applied our knowledge of this to create a persuasive poster about a missing feather. Enjoy the half term holiday Year 2 so that you are fighting fit for Term Two.
Week Beginning 28.9.20 - 5.10.20
It has been a busy start to the Year 2 class. We have focused our learning on recalling what we remember from Year 1 and then thinking about what we need to do in Year 2. So far, we have been retelling the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel, learning about tens and ones along with place value and using this to help us solve addition calculations either with resources or with our structured or unstructured number line. We cannot wait to find out what we will be learning next.
