English at Beacon Primary Academy

At Beacon Primary Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every pupil develops a secure foundation in English, enabling them to thrive as confident readers, writers and speakers. As a small seaside community school, we recognise the importance of tailoring our curriculum to meet the needs of all learners. Through adaptive teaching, we provide equitable access to high-quality English learning, ensuring that every child is challenged, supported and inspired to achieve their full potential.

Our English curriculum is designed to:

  • Develop fluent, confident and accurate readers who demonstrate strong comprehension skills.
  • Foster a lifelong habit of reading widely and regularly, both for pleasure and for information.
  • Build a rich vocabulary, a secure understanding of grammar, and an appreciation of the conventions of spoken and written language.
  • Expose pupils to a wide range of texts that reflect our diverse literary heritage, broadening their cultural capital.
  • Enable pupils to write with clarity, accuracy and creativity, adapting their style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
  • Use spoken language to deepen learning, supporting pupils to explain their ideas, reason effectively and engage in meaningful discussion.
  • Develop confident communicators who can listen attentively, present their views clearly and participate in debate.

At Beacon, we believe that English underpins success across the wider curriculum. By prioritising high expectations, adaptive approaches and a love of literature, we aim to equip our pupils with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to succeed both within our community and beyond.

Our aims for English link closely to our wider Curriculum Intent – see the table below.
