English at Beacon Primary Academy

At Beacon Primary Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every pupil develops a secure foundation in English, enabling them to thrive as confident readers, writers and speakers. As a small seaside community school, we recognise the importance of tailoring our curriculum to meet the needs of all learners. Our English curriculum is designed to:

• Develop fluent, confident and accurate readers who demonstrate strong comprehension skills.
• Foster a lifelong habit of reading widely and regularly, both for pleasure and for information.
• Build a rich vocabulary, a secure understanding of grammar, and an appreciation of the conventions of spoken and written language.
• Expose pupils to a wide range of texts that reflect our diverse literary heritage, broadening their cultural capital.
• Enable pupils to write with clarity, accuracy and creativity, adapting their style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
• Use spoken language to deepen learning, supporting pupils to explain their ideas, reason effectively and engage in meaningful discussion.
• Develop confident communicators who can listen attentively, present their views clearly and participate in debate.
